UCD 0 Cobh Ramblers 1 - LOI 1st Division, UCD Bowl

Cobh beat UCD in Belfield on Friday night. The hosts had more of the possession, but Matthew Whelan's breakaway goal was the difference in a cagey affair in Dublin 4.

A minute's silence was observed before kick-off for Doctor Caroline Hussey, the former Vice-President of UCD AFC.

It was a quiet opening period, in this important fixture for both clubs. Cobh had the ball in the net in the 6th minute, as Matthew Whelan tapped home after Niall Corbet had fumbled. But it was ruled out for offside.

But it was a rare chance, as both sides struggled to put anything together. UCD boss Collie O'Neill couldn't hide his frustration in the 18th minute as Jason McClelland put a free-kick straight over the bar from a good position on the right edge of the box.

McClelland did it all himself in the 24th minute, as he controlled a high ball, before turning his man and hitting the ball on the half-volley. He dragged the effort just wide to the right.

Gary O'Neill was possibly lucky not to be booked in the 27th minute, as he lunged in on a Cobh player, but referee Damien McGraith instead gave him a talking to.

Georgie Kelly had the best chance of the first-half, as he smashed an effort towards goal in the 36th minute, but the Cobh defender got in to block. In the same attack, Daniel Tobin hit a sweet shot from the edge of the box, but Paul Hunt dived to his right to hold the ball.

Sixty seconds later, Corbet had to push the ball over the bar from a Ben O'Riordan header.

The Students had a chance just before the break, as McClelland put in a clever, low cross from the left. It was just too far ahead of the onrushing Kelly, as it went wide to the right of Hunt's goal.

The second-half began with McClelland whipping an effort wide to the left of Hunt's goal from the edge of the box, as UCD continued in the ascendancy which they had created at the end of the first period.

O'Neill should have done better from the edge of the box in the 53rd minute, but he couldn't keep his effort down.

Whelan nearly slipped Ian Mylod in a couple of minutes later, but he just put too much on the attempted pass, in a two on two situation. Ramblers coach Stephen Henderson had some choice words of annoyance from the sideline.

Whelan had the next chance in a hectic period, but Maxi Kouogun did well to get in to block the header, and only concede the corner.

It looked as though Greg Sloggett had put College ahead in the 60th minute, but his effort deflected off his own man, Kelly, and just wide to the right of the post.

The visitors did take the lea in the 78th minute. Whelan chased down a long ball, outmuscled Liam Scales, and finished to Corbet's right.

Three crucial points for Cobh, who stay just two points behind Waterford at the top. UCD are a further two behind, and now must put a run together to keep their promotion hopes alive.
