UCD 2 Cabinteely 1 - 11/03/16

UCD picked up their first win of the 2016 SSE Airtricity League on Friday night. The Students went ahead in the first-half through Maxi Kouogan. But Cabinteely levelled it up in the second-half as Ben Hanrahan finished well passed Corbett. UCD were rewarded for their ascendancy in the final ten minutes however as Georgie Kelly finished smartly following some good build up play.

Two early UCD free-kicks produced a single chance. Gary O'Neill's volley was always rising. College's third set piece produced the opening goal.

Kieran "Marty" Waters took the corner. It was not dealt with by Cabinteely keeper Michael Kelly, and Kouogun was on hand to head home.

Five minutes later Georgie Kelly got on the end of a cross from the left, but Michael Kelly was able to hold the effort.

O'Neill forced Kelly into another save in the twenty-sixth minute, as his free-kick from twenty-five yards nearly dipped under the crossbar.

UCD were playing the far more adventurous football at that point, and Mark Langtry's mazy run forced a corner out right. Waters's cross caused yet more confusion in the Cabo box, where it was clear that the lessons had not been learned from the goal, but College couldn't get the ball home despite Kouogun heading the ball dangerously across goal.

Cathal Brady was looking dangerous for UCD on the right, but the Kilbogget Park side were inflicting more damage upon themselves. Criminally they lost a throw-in deep in their own half, and UCD nearly doubled their advantage as Dylan Watts set up Waters. The winger's effort from the edge of the box was only inches wide to the right of Kelly's goal.

Cabinteely's only chance of the half came in stoppage-time. Mick Brown guided a ball through to Stephen Hanley, whose effort was saved down low by Niall Corbett.

Cabinteely improved in the early stages of the second-half, but the first chance was still created by The Students. Georgie Kelly did well to win the ball out left. His low cross eventually found its way to Dylan Watts. He pushed his shot wide to the right.

Cabo were level two minutes later. Oscar Brennan's cross found Ben Hanrahan. He showed great composure to take a touch and finish it to the left of Corbett.

But UCD continued to play the better football. Brennan's sending-off helped The Boys in Blue's cause. Ryan Swan and O'Neill had chances, before they took the lead once more. Good build up play out right saw Kelly find himself with space in the Cabinteely box. He had space to finish passed his namesake Michael in the Cabinteely goal.

The final five minutes was frantic, as Cabinteely attempted to force an equaliser. But their efforts proved to be in vain, and with Michael Connolly's final whistle, UCD had their first points of the season.
