Dublin 1-14 Cork 2-10 - NFL, Croke Park 05/03/16

Dublin produced a stirring second-half comeback it claim their fourth Allianz National Football League win in a row. Going in five down at half-time, Jim Gavin's side scored seven points on the spin before using their experience to finish the game out.

Colm O'Neill opened the scoring for Cork with a free in the third minute, but in a tight encounter, scores were hard to come by. Indeed the next score also came from a free after Phily McMahon pulled down Mark Collins; O'Neill duly converted. Another Collins free had Cork three up at the ten minute mark.

Cork extended their lead soon afterwards as Paul Kerrigan scored fine point from play. At the other end, Dublin were being frustrated by a packed Cork defence.

And the next score, when it came, was a nineteenth minute O'Neill penalty after McMahon fouled Peter Kelleher.

But Dublin suddenly began to find the gaps. A long ball to Bernard Brogan was collected and laid off to Diarmaid Connolly. He ran at goal before burying it to the net. Almost immediately, Paddy Andrews scored a great point from out left.

But Cork continued to stifle Dublin, and the next score  ame eight minutes later from Kelleher. Kerrigan chased a wide ball, claimed it, and passed it across the goal for the full-forward to palm it to the net.

And Peadar Healy's men had the better of the exchanges in the final five minutes to lead by 2-7 to 1-3 at the break.

It took nearly four minutes for either team to score in the second-half; a Cormac Costello free after Connolly was fouled. Andrews followed up sixty seconds later, finishing a fine team move with a point off his right.

Costello pulled another one back with a free in the forty-third minute, and Connolly pulled Dublin within a score from the next play, kicking one over with his left.

Cork nearly had the game won in the fifty-third minute when a high ball in from Daniel Goulding was punched against the post by Kelleher. Dublin responded immediately with another Costello free. And the corner forward soon had another, to lift The Hill into full voice with fifteen minutes to go.

And Costello had Dublin level in the fifty-eight minute. His fifth free was his side's eighth score in a row. Another two points from the Whitehall Colmcille man had Dublin two points up going into the final ten minutes.

All of a sudden Cork came to life. The Rebels scored two points, through a Hurley free and Ruairi Dean, either side of a second yellow for Johnny Cooper, to set the crowd up for a grandstand finish. The teams traded scores through Costello and Mark Collins, before Kevin McManamon was introduced, and won a free in the final minute. The ever reliable Costello put it over from a tight angle.

But Dublin weren't finished yet. Deep into injury time James McCarthy's lung bursting run was rewarded with a goal to put the result beyond doubt. The result guarantees Dublin a semi-final place.
