Deja-Vu in the Southside Derby

It was a case of deja-vu between UCD and Cabinteely as the southside clubs shared the spoils at Stradbrook on Thursday night. Cabinteely led by two goals at one stage, but Mick Kelly's sending off changed the game.

The hosts opened the scoring inside the opening four minutes. Niall Corbet punched a ball clear in the UCD goal, but Kevin Knight put in a cross, which Daire Doyle headed home. Georgie Kelly should have had the visitors level in the 13th minute, but he hit a weak effort straight at Kelly.

Sixty seconds later, he did score, finishing from a cross from the right to level up the match. Cabo retook the lead in the 21st minute. Evan Galvin split the UCD defence open with a smart pass. Joe Doyle latched onto it and finished into the left corner. That's his second in two games, and his fifth in the league this season.

Cabinteely doubled their advantage against the run of play in the 65th minute. Kelly's kick-out went all the way into his opposite number's box, and Marty Waters ghosted in to finish over Corbet's head. And while UCD were controlling possession, points looked to be beyond them at that stage.

The game turned in 72nd minute. Kelly brought down Daire O'Connor. He was the last man, and he was sent off. UCD sensed blood. First, Georgie Kelly finished from Gary O'Neill's free-kick. He controlled, before swivelling and finishing from five yards.

Jason McClelland's equaliser was the pick of the goals, as he finished from the edge of the box, curling in a stunning effort into the left corner.

Try as they might, UCD couldn't use the momentum to get them over the line. They remain second, one point behind Waterford. Cabinteely are a further seven points behind the leaders.
