Dublin 1-14 Monaghan 0-16 - NFL, February 27th

Dublin won an enthralling Allianz National Football League clash at Croke Park by 1-14 to 0-16 on Saturday night.

Monaghan opened the scoring through a Conor McManus free, but Dublin soon equalised with a well taken Cormac Costello point from play. Monaghan pushed ahead again through McManus, but Dublin responded with a point from Philly McMahon.

Monaghan then hit a purple patch as they scored the next five to lead by seven points to two after seventeen minutes.

Dublin needed to step it up a gear, and Dean Rock settled the team with a point from a free-kick in the nineteenth minute. Emmett Ó Conghaile hit a sweet one off the left in the twenty-second minute to reduce to deficit to three, before Costello reduced it further with a solo effort.

The teams traded scores through Kieran Duffy, from play, and a McManus free for the Farney, and a Rock free, and a McMahon point from play for the Dubs, to leave just two points in it with a half an hour on the clock.

Two Rock frees brought Dublin level, and Jim Gavin's side took the lead for the first time through another Rock free on the stroke of half time.

When Diarmaid Connolly converted a forty-second minute penalty to put Dublin five clear, you would have been forgiven for thinking that it would be enough.

But again Monaghan, to their great credit, continued to battle. Three McManus frees had them within two, and Dublin fans had their hearts in their mouths in the fiftieth minute as Shane Carey's partially blocked effort wrong-footed Stephen Cluxton, before hitting the post. Thankfully for the Dubs, Cluxton was able to clear.

Another McManus free had Monaghan within one, but a classy combination of Brogan and Flynn pushed Dublin ahead by two once more. Darren Hughes did well to win another free for Monaghan, which McManus duly converted to leave the minimum between the sides with eight minutes to play. And another McManus free had the sides level as the game entered four minutes of stoppage time.

It was then that Dublin's experience told, and Bernard Brogan hit the winner in the seventy-second minute to give both points to Dublin.
