Dublin 1-16 DCU 1-12, O'Byrne Cup, January 10th

A bitterly cold but bright day met the teams in Parnell Park and it was DCU who opened the scoring through Shane Carey after two minutes - a pointed free. They followed this up in the sixth minute with a well taken Enda Smith point from the left.

But Dublin immediately responded with their first score, a point from Cuala's Con O'Callaghan.

A brawl in the centre of the park in the tenth minute saw John Small and Michael Quinn booked, but The Students again responded well to regain a two point lead through Carey once more.

A smart ball from Tomás Brady from the right in the fifteenth minute put Dean Rock in a good position. He was fouled, and placed the subsequent free over from twenty-five yards.

DCU missed a great goal chance ninety seconds later. Michael Savage made a great initial save, before the ball spilled to two waiting College players. Neither could put anything on it, and Dublin had survived a mini scare.

It seemed to wake them up, as they scored a quick goal and a point through Con O'Callaghan and Rock respectively.

The final fifteen minutes was competitive and reasonably open, as Dublin put a bit of breathing space between the sides to lead by 1-7 to 0-6 at the break.

The teams traded points in the opening twenty minutes of the second-half, and DCU made it clear they weren't going to lie down with an O'Byrne Cup semi-final place, and the scalp of the All-Ireland champions at stake. They trailed by just a goal with thirteen minutes to go.

And when Dublin pulled 1-3 clear with five minutes to go, DCU struck a goal through Enda Smith.

But it was at that point that Dublin's experience told, as they were able to keep DCU at that distance until the end.
