DEVLIN DELIGHTED CABO ARE UP AND RUNNING

SSE Airtricity League reporter Peter Branigan spoke with Cabinteely boss Pat Devlin after their 2-0 win over Wexford on Friday night.

Cabinteely boss Pat Devlin says he's realistic about the task ahead of him in the 2017 SEE Airtricity League season. The South Dublin club picked up their first points of the season against Wexford on Friday night at Stradbrook. Two first-half Joe Doyle goals proved to be the difference between the sides. But the experienced boss, who has previously worked with the likes of Bray and UCD, says he's well aware of the challenge facing him and his squad.

"There's an awful lot to do. It's probably one of the biggest undertakings I've ever taken on. We're getting there, but there's a lot of work to be done."

But Devlin believes his players are responding well to his expectations.

"Every day, every week, there's a challenge there for us. But we'll get through it, and always do our best."

Having come into the game without scoring in their opening two matches, Devlin was happy to register a couple of goals, and more importantly, put some points on the board.

"We're up and running. We're getting familiar with one another, we're settling things down. We made a few changes, and it worked for us tonight. I'm happy with the lads"

And the Cabo boss reserved special praise for the player he took with him from Belfield in the close season. "(Marty Waters) had a great game, and you could see he enjoyed himself."

Waters tried an audacious effort in the second-half. Graham Doyle, in the Wexford goal, came out to take a free-kick. Cabinteely won the ball, and quickly spread it left to Waters, who was just inside the visitor's half of the pitch. He went for the spectacular, shooting from all of forty-five yards. The effort beat Doyle, but not the post, as it just went wide to the right.

"That effort was fantastic, it's a pity it didn't go in. He fully deserved that shot to go in."

The result means Cabinteely leapfrog Wexford into 6th place in the table, ahead of a trip to Longford next weekend. Wexford's defeat means they are yet to win a game since their relegation from the Premier Division last season
